- Explanatory hypertext <sum06 1 6>
- =====================
-
- Much of the appeal for hypertext centers on the concept
- of "live-footnotes" or "electronic cross-references"
- that provide additional information at the touch of a
- button. <link04>
-
- Explanatory I call these kinds of hypertext jumps "explanatory" as
- hypertext jumps each jump provides expanded information on the current
- =============== subject. Such jumps are useful as they often:
- ┌───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
- │ - provide instant access to more detailed information │
- │ - save time in using an index for cross-references │
- │ - reflect expert judgement on relationships │
- └───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
- Although they may seem perfect, explanatory hypertext
- systems typically contain two fundamental defects:
-
- Circular hypertext -- lost in network <link35>
- Unclear hypertext -- need predictable jumps <link32 2>
-
- The Solution? See transitive hypertext <link53> and semantic
- ============= taxonomies <link30> for details.
