  4.                     Much of the appeal for hypertext centers on the concept
  5.                     of "live-footnotes" or "electronic cross-references"
  6.                     that provide additional information at the touch of a
  7.                     button.  <link04>

  9. Explanatory         I call these kinds of hypertext jumps "explanatory" as
  10. hypertext jumps     each jump provides expanded information on the current
  11. ===============     subject.  Such jumps are useful as they often:

  13.                 │   -  provide instant access to more detailed information  │
  14.                 │   -  save time in using an index for cross-references     │
  15.                 │   -  reflect expert judgement on relationships            │

  17.                     Although they may seem perfect, explanatory hypertext
  18.                     systems typically contain two fundamental defects:
  19.  
  20.                     Circular hypertext -- lost in network         <link35>
  21.                     Unclear hypertext  -- need predictable jumps  <link32 2>
